Planespotting Bologna — LIPE
Bologna Marconi, north-west of the city beside the A14, is the main airport of Emilia-Romagna and a good example of an airport whose photo positions punch above its traffic levels. Movements are moderate, but the fences sit close to the single runway, 12/30, and the surrounding farmland and riverbanks give elevated, uncluttered views. Runway 12 is the main direction: aircraft land from the north-west over the countryside, while in quiet periods departures are often turned around to take off from 30 so they avoid climbing over the city. Bologna's busy trade fair calendar brings aircraft upgrades and bizjets, and when fog or wind closes Florence, its flights divert here — a winter bonus. The Marconi Express monorail links the terminal with Bologna Centrale station, but every spot needs a car. Winter fog in the Po Valley can wipe out a whole day, so check the forecast.

Reno riverbank at the end of runway 30 (Lippo)
The raised flood bank of the Reno river at the runway 30 end of the field gives an elevated view of everything on runway 30 and of aircraft vacating at the end after landing on 12 — the only place for ground shots of widebodies on 12 arrivals. Walk along the bank to find a clean angle on early departures off 30, including freighters.
- Getting there
- From the airport follow signs for Lippo; with the runway on your left, park below the riverbank where the road begins to curve and climb the path up the bank. Plenty of shade, no facilities.
- Best time
- Runway 30 movements from sunrise to about midday; landings vacating at the end until 16:00–17:00 in summer.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm; a 777 lining up is about 85 mm.
Bargellino fence at the runway 12 holding area
Widely considered the best position at Bologna: at Bargellino the end of the taxiway and the start of runway 12 come close to the road, so every departure off 12 passes right in front of you on the taxiway and the runway, along with 12 arrivals. Some light aircraft and Ryanair jets enter the runway at an intermediate point and skip you.
- Getting there
- Follow the perimeter road to Bargellino and park near the trees or the crash gate — never in front of the gate, or police will move you on. A 3-step ladder helps; locals are often there. Cafés and a supermarket in Calderara di Reno, about 3 km away.
- Best time
- Runway 12, from about 13:00 to sunset in summer and from 10:00 in winter. When 30 is in use, move toward the general aviation terminal for departures.
- Lens
- 28–105 mm on the taxiway, 70–150 mm for the runway and landings.
Bargellino railway station car park
The station car park near Bargellino, under the final approach to runway 12. A short, early session for landings with the light behind you.
- Getting there
- Continue past the Bargellino fence to the roundabout and take the last exit to the station car park; park at the entrance end.
- Best time
- 12 arrivals, sunrise to about 09:00, summer only.
- Lens
- 50–120 mm.
Via Fossa Cava riverbank
A small riverbank beside the fence on the runway 12 side of the field that lifts you above the fence for every movement on runway 12 and take-offs from 30. It is the best place for the early-morning freighters, and with a long lens you may pick out cargo aircraft on their stands.
- Getting there
- From Lippo drive through toward the runway 12 end via Via San Vitalino, Via Due Scale and Via del Cerchio, then follow Via Fossa Cava to the end by two houses. Park considerately and walk along the bank on the left. Bring everything you need.
- Best time
- Sunrise to about 09:00, summer only.
- Lens
- 50–200 mm.

What you'll see
Ryanair has a sizeable base and operates most low-cost routes, with Wizz Air, easyJet, Vueling and Volotea adding to the A320 and 737 stream, many flights heading to Romania, Albania and Moldova. ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc and other network carriers connect Bologna to their hubs, and Emirates has long been the regular widebody. Express freighters — DHL, Star Air for UPS and ASL — arrive in the early morning. The Bologna trade fairs bring bizjets and larger aircraft on popular routes, and winter fog at Florence sends diversions here. Military touch-and-go practice appears occasionally.

FAQ
What's that plane over Bologna?
Spotterra's live map tracks every ADS-B aircraft over Bologna and Emilia-Romagna with type, registration and route — useful on winter days when Florence diversions start arriving.
Which runway is used at Bologna?
Runway 12 is the main runway, with landings from the north-west. In quiet periods aircraft often depart from 30 to avoid flying over the city, and with unfavourable winds 30 becomes the active runway.
What's the best spot at LIPE?
The Bargellino fence on runway 12 in the afternoon, for close taxiway and take-off shots. Mornings belong to the Reno riverbank and Via Fossa Cava.
Is fog a problem?
Yes — Po Valley fog can last all day in winter. Watch the forecast; on clearer days fog at Florence can bring extra diversions to Bologna.
