Planespotting Faro — LPFR
Faro is the only airport for the Algarve, squeezed between the city and the lagoons of the Ria Formosa nature park, and from April to October it is one of the busiest leisure airports in Portugal. A single 2,490 m runway, 10/28, runs roughly east–west, and the summer westerlies mean runway 28 is used almost all the time: arrivals come in from the east over Faro and the terminal area, and departures climb out west over the lagoon. Runway 10 shows up only in unusual weather. The traffic is a near-continuous stream of British and Irish holiday flights mixed with charters from across Europe and TAP's domestic links, with business jets serving the golf resorts of the western Algarve. There's no viewing terrace, but the flat surroundings and a couple of small hills along the perimeter tracks — including a purpose-made observation hill with a bench — make it easy to work. Bring water and sun protection; none of the perimeter spots has any facilities.

Water treatment plant track — runway 28 final
East of the terminal, a dirt track along the fence ends at a water purification plant right under the final approach to runway 28. It's the place for the first arrivals of the day, with soft early light on the approaching jets.
- Getting there
- Near the car rental offices east of the terminal, take the roundabout exit onto the dirt road along the airport fence and drive to the end; park by the plant. Bus 14 or 16 from Faro to the airport plus a walk, or a rented bike. No facilities — bring breakfast.
- Best time
- Runway 28 arrivals, early morning until about 09:00.
- Lens
- 250 mm for an A320.
Perimeter fence beyond the footbridge — runway 28 line-up
From the same parking, cross the small pedestrian bridge and follow the fence. Close to the runway 28 threshold you get line-ups at very short range plus apron movements in the distance; about 350 m further on, by a lone small tree, a second position works better once the sun has moved round.
- Getting there
- Park as for the water treatment plant and walk. Some fence holes have been widened enough for a standard lens; a small ladder gets you over the fence instead. The tree offers the only shade.
- Best time
- Runway 28 operations. Near the bridge from early morning to about 11:00; by the tree until around noon.
- Lens
- 50 mm for an A320 in line-up near the bridge, 150 mm from the tree, up to 400 mm for the apron.
Small hill past the fire station
A small hill along a dirt track past the airport fire brigade gives a raised view over the fence of runway 28 finals and line-ups, with a cleaner background than the eastern spots.
- Getting there
- From the N125-10 take the first roundabout exit towards Praia de Faro, pass the approach lights and take the second exit at the next roundabout. Follow the small road along the fence (fence on your left) until it turns to dirt, continue past the fire station and turn left onto the narrower track to the hill. Park at the hill.
- Best time
- Runway 28, from noon until about 16:30. Heat haze affects aircraft on the runway.
- Lens
- 125 mm for an A320.
Midfield hill on the perimeter track
Another small mound along the same dirt road, but opposite the runway rather than at its end — every movement on 10/28 passes in front of you. A bird-scaring device just behind the fence goes off with a loud bang now and then; it's harmless.
- Getting there
- As for the fire-station hill, but stay on the main dirt track along the fence until you reach the mound. Absolutely nothing nearby, so bring everything you need.
- Best time
- Both runway directions, from noon until about 16:30.
- Lens
- 125 mm for an A320.
Observation hill by the Praia de Faro road
A low hill next to a large new car park, with a bench put there for spotters. It covers final approach to runway 10 on the rare days it's used, and on normal days aircraft vacating runway 28 via the western taxiways and late-rotating 28 departures.
- Getting there
- From the N125-10 take the exit for Praia de Faro, pass the approach lights and take the second exit at the next roundabout into the big car park; walk up the hill. No shade.
- Best time
- Noon to about 16:30 for 10 arrivals or 28 departures; aircraft vacating 28 until about 18:00.
- Lens
- 125 mm for runway 10 arrivals, 200–300 mm for aircraft vacating 28.

What you'll see
Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 account for the bulk of flights, with British Airways, Aer Lingus and TUI keeping the UK and Irish links dense from morning to night. From the continent come Transavia, Condor, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Edelweiss, Luxair, Corendon, Norwegian, Vueling, Wizz Air and Smartwings, while TAP provides the links to Lisbon and Porto. Widebodies are rare and usually seasonal charters. Business jets serving the golf and villa resorts around Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are a steady side dish in summer. The season runs from April to October; in winter the airport quietens down considerably, though golfers and long-stay visitors keep a base level of flights.

FAQ
What's that plane over Faro?
Look it up on Spotterra's live map: every aircraft over Faro and the Algarve appears in real time with its type, registration and route. It's free, runs in the browser and uses ADS-B data.
Which runway does Faro use?
Runway 28, almost always — summer winds are westerly, so arrivals come from the east over the city. Runway 10 is used only in rare weather conditions.
Where can I spot at Faro without a car?
Buses 14 and 16 link Faro city with the airport, and the water treatment plant track and the fence near the footbridge are walkable from the eastern side of the terminal. The hills along the perimeter tracks are far easier by car or bicycle.
Is there a viewing terrace at Faro airport?
No. The observation hill by the Praia de Faro road, with its bench, is the closest thing to an official viewing point.
