Planespotting Funchal — LPMA
Madeira's airport is a bucket-list stop for spotters because of where the runway sits: a 2,781 m strip squeezed between mountains and the Atlantic, with its north-eastern third built on a platform held up by 180 columns, each about 70 m tall. Runway 05/23 is used in both directions, but 05 is the usual one. Hills and cliffs beyond the 05 end rule out a straight-in instrument approach, so crews fly a visual approach along the coast and make a tight right turn onto a very short final past Santa Cruz — the Kai Tak-style manoeuvre the airport is known for. Pilots need special training to fly in, and strict mandatory wind limits mean go-arounds and diversions to Porto Santo or Lisbon are a regular part of the show. Traffic is modest, mainly European narrowbodies, but almost every arrival is worth the shutter, and the terminal has its own rooftop terrace.

Terminal rooftop terrace
The terminal roof is a long viewing terrace split by a wall into a public landside half and a passenger-only airside half. From here you see every movement on the runway and the apron in front of you. Much of the landside part is now behind glass; the southernmost corner is still open.
- Getting there
- Inside the terminal, take the stairs or lifts on the far left up to the public terrace; with a boarding pass, take the stairs right after security for the open airside part. The Aerobus from Funchal stops at the terminal. Snack bar and toilets at the entrance. Don't climb the planter wall to shoot over the glass — it isn't allowed.

- Morning until about 15:00 in summer, when the sun is behind the terminal.

Hill above Rua de Santa Catarina, Água de Pena
A small hill on the mountain side of the runway, opposite the terminal, with a view of every movement. It is the best spot for 05 touchdowns with the ocean behind the aircraft, and 23 arrivals turn off on the exit within reach of your lens. You can see the ramp from here too.

- Leave the VR1 at exit 21 and follow signs for Água de Pena (not Santa Cruz), uphill along the runway to a large car park on the right. Walk back to the bus stop and take the footpath up the hill. About 30 minutes on foot from the terminal; a small snack bar along the road.

- Summer afternoons from about 16:00 to sunset. In winter the low sun puts the runway in the mountains' shadow early.

Rua de São Sebastião stairways — 05 departures
Two sets of steps up from Rua de São Sebastião bring you level with the runway on the mountain side, side-on to aircraft accelerating and rotating off 05. Arrivals are still in the air here.

- Same exit 21 route as Água de Pena; park at the roadside and use either the first stairway by the parking or the second one past the junction.

- Runway 05 operations, summer afternoons from about 16:00. Heat haze on hot days.

Cargo building, south of the terminal — 05 arrivals
A short walk from the terminal by the small cargo building, aircraft pass on short final to 05 with the coast behind them. The runway is above you, so ground shots and true side-on views aren't possible, but the arrival shots are dramatic.

- Follow the 'Cargo' signs from the VR1 and use the marked spaces, or walk 10 minutes from arrivals: keep right past the white police building.
- Best time
- Runway 05 arrivals, morning to about 15:00.

VR1 footpath by the Machico tunnel — runway 23
A pavement along the VR1 near the Machico tunnel, at the pillar-supported 23 end. This is where you go when the wind turns and aircraft land on 23 and depart from it. There are restaurants in the neighbourhood.

- Leave the VR1 before the tunnel to Machico, go round the next roundabout and back over the tunnel on the parallel road. Park in the residential streets and walk to the pedestrian crossing. There is no parking on the VR1 itself.

Upper Rua de São Sebastião — mountain view
Higher up Rua de São Sebastião towards the mountains, you look down on the whole runway. It is good for 05 arrivals and for aircraft backtracking along the runway before departing from 05.

- Drive west and uphill from the stairways until the view opens up. No public transport, no facilities.

- Summer afternoons from about 16:00.
