Planespotting Naples — LIRN
Capodichino is squeezed into the dense northern suburbs of Naples, 7 km from the centre, and it is one of the most interesting and most awkward airports in Italy to spot. Interesting because the field is shared with the military — the US Navy has its European headquarters in Naples, so American and NATO transports are regular visitors — and because the Atitech maintenance base on the north side brings in airliners you would never expect in southern Italy. Awkward because the airport is ringed by high walls topped with fences, police patrol often, ladders are pointless, and spotters have been told to stop photographing without authorisation. There is a single runway, 06/24, and the sea breeze from the west keeps runway 24 in use almost all the time, with arrivals coming over the eastern suburbs. Summer is busy but hazy; winter has clearer air and better light, though fewer flights.

Pink multi-storey car park by the terminal
The top floor of the six-storey pink and orange garage south-west of the terminal looks over the runway, part of the apron and the maintenance area behind. Departures on 24 and everything on 06 pass in front; light arrivals on 24 may turn off before reaching you.
- Getting there
- Drive in from the terminal road, Viale Fulco Ruffo di Calabria, pay at the barrier and go to the north-western side of the top deck. Terminal facilities are next door; Alibus shuttles connect the terminal with central Naples. Municipal police have sent spotters away and asked them to delete photos, especially during police or military activity — keep a low profile and leave if asked.
- Best time
- Runway from sunrise to early afternoon; apron only until around noon. Heat haze is severe in summer.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm; a C-17 on arrival is about 140 mm, an A320 departure about 180 mm.
Via Giovanni Pascoli (runway 24 threshold)
The street that loops around the north-eastern end of the runway, right under the approach to 24. Because you can walk from one side of the approach path to the other, it works at any time of day.
- Getting there
- Follow Via Giovanni Pascoli toward the end of the runway and park opposite the car dealership across from the fence. Patrols are frequent here; keep the camera out of sight between movements and expect to be checked.
- Best time
- 24 arrivals, all day — switch sides of the approach with the sun.
- Lens
- 70–200 mm; a Fokker 100 head-on is about 180 mm.
McDonald's car park near Casoria shopping area
A set of steps in front of a former megastore, further out on the 24 approach, with Vesuvius in the distance behind the arriving aircraft. Being far from the fence, it attracts no attention from security.
- Getting there
- From the SP1 head toward the Casoria shopping centre and park in a quiet corner of the McDonald's car park; walk back to the steps of the old Yes Megastore building. Food and toilets at the restaurant.
- Best time
- 24 arrivals, afternoon to sunset. Haze can reduce contrast at this distance.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm.
MediaWorld car park (A1 / SP1 junction)
A shopping centre car park east of the airport where the A1 motorway meets the SP1, under the approach to 24. It is the morning counterpart to the McDonald's spot, with shade, food and drinks next to you.
- Getting there
- Enter the MediaWorld car park from the SP1 and choose a quiet corner away from the shop entrance.
- Best time
- 24 arrivals, from sunrise to early afternoon.
- Lens
- 70–300 mm.

What you'll see
easyJet and Ryanair both base aircraft here, with Wizz Air, Volotea and ITA Airways adding to the A320 and 737 stream, and Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France and KLM linking Naples to their hubs. Summer brings tourist routes to the UK, Scandinavia and the Netherlands and a seasonal United flight to Newark. The military side is the highlight: US Navy C-40s, USAF C-17s and C-130s and other NATO transports visit regularly. Atitech's MRO base pulls in unusual airliners for heavy checks and repaints, and in summer firefighting Canadair CL-415s are stationed here. Police helicopters also operate from the field.

FAQ
What's that plane over Naples?
Spotterra's live map shows ADS-B traffic over Naples, Vesuvius and the bay in real time — airliners, and the US Navy or NATO transports whenever they broadcast a position. Open it in your browser for free.
Is spotting allowed at Naples airport?
It is tolerated rather than welcomed. Police and military security patrol often, and spotters at the car park have been told photography needs authorisation. Stay discreet, never use a ladder, and leave if asked. Local spotters can advise on the current situation.
Which runway is used at LIRN?
Runway 24, almost all the time, thanks to the westerly breeze from the sea. Arrivals come in over Casoria and the A1 motorway, which is where the outside spots are.
Why do strange airliners turn up at Naples?
Atitech, one of Europe's largest independent maintenance companies, works on aircraft from many airlines at its Capodichino base. Set a Spotterra alert for Naples to catch unusual arrivals.
