Planespotting Skiathos — LGSK
Skiathos is Europe's answer to Maho Beach. The single runway, 01/19 and only about 1,600 m long, crosses the eastern end of the island from shore to shore, and the coast road and small harbour on the edge of Skiathos town run right past the southern threshold. Most arrivals land on 01 over the harbour, roll to the far end, turn on the turning pad and backtrack, then line up with their tails pointing at the road for take-off — so the same jet passes you twice. Outside summer there are only a few ATR flights a day from Athens. From June to September charter and low-cost jets from across Europe pile in, heavily concentrated on Fridays and weekends, when dozens of A320s and 737s can come through in a day. Everything at the southern end is walkable from the town and the terminal, and two beach bars give shade between movements. The jet blast is real and has injured people: never stand directly behind an aircraft at full power.

Runway 01 threshold by the harbour (Amaretto bar)
The famous spot: the waterfront road and car park right at the end of runway 01, where arrivals cross the road at very low height and departures start their roll with engines pointed at you. A low barrier rather than a high fence means clean shots over the top. The Amaretto snack bar has shade, drinks and a screen showing inbound flights.
- Getting there
- About 10 minutes on foot from the terminal (turn left and follow the runway south), or 8 minutes from the town's port bus stop along the seafront. Parking at the spot, but it fills up on busy days.
- Best time
- Any time runway 01 is in use, which is most days; choose your side of the approach according to the sun. Fridays in July and August are the peak.

- 16–55 mm for the overhead and jet-blast shots; nothing longer needed.
The small harbour opposite the threshold
Across from the bar, along the little harbour, you get clean side-on views of aircraft over the water just before touchdown on 01. Walking along the quay changes the angle from front three-quarter to pure profile, with boats in the foreground if you want them.

- Walk across from the threshold area; everything is within a couple of minutes.

- 01 arrivals from sunrise until about noon, with the sun in the east and south-east behind you.

Seafront bench on the hill south of the threshold
A three-minute walk from the port along the shore brings you up to a public bench under the trees. From here 01 arrivals line up with Skiathos town and the moored boats behind them — the postcard version of the Skiathos shot. Departures off 19 are already too high to be interesting.

Xanemos Beach hill (runway 19 end)
At the northern end the runway runs out at Xanemos Beach. From the small hill above the beach you see aircraft turning on the pad before backtracking, runway 19 line-ups and departures, and arrivals on 19 when the wind blows from the north.

- Follow the road parallel to the runway north from the terminal (about 20 minutes on foot); large free car park, then a short footpath up the hill. The beach bar has drinks.
- Best time
- Morning until about noon.

- Up to 300 mm for line-ups.
Rock above the north apron
North of the terminal, a small rocky outcrop by a stone track gives an elevated view of the newer northern apron and the full length of the runway — the best place to log registrations and catch aircraft on stand.
- Getting there
- From the terminal head north past the apron and turn left onto the stone track; scramble up the rock or stay by the fence below for a lower angle. No shade or facilities — bring water.
- Best time
- From mid-afternoon to sunset in summer.

- About 150 mm for an A320.

What you'll see
Year-round the schedule is thin: Olympic Air and Sky Express ATR 42/72 flights to Athens. The summer season changes everything, with easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Transavia, TUI, Neos, Sunclass, Condor, SAS and Volotea bringing A319/A320/A321 and 737-800/MAX jets from the UK, Scandinavia, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. Fridays and weekends are by far the busiest; September is quieter but still lively. Business jets arrive in high season for the island's villas. There is no cargo or military traffic, and nothing bigger than a narrowbody fits the short runway.

Is the Skiathos jet blast dangerous?
Yes. Departing jets line up a few metres from the road and spool up to full power. Gravel, bags and people have been blown over and injuries have happened. Stand to the side of the runway centreline, protect your eyes and gear, and never hold onto the barrier directly behind an aircraft.
When is the best day to visit LGSK?

Do I need a car on Skiathos?
