Planespotting Venice — LIPZ
Marco Polo sits on the edge of the northern Venetian lagoon at Tessera, about 7 km from the historic city, and it is the main gateway to north-east Italy. Venice draws a remarkable long-haul mix for an airport of its size — transatlantic and Gulf widebodies in summer on top of four low-cost bases — but it is not an easy place to photograph. The southern side of the field is water, there is a single active runway, 04R/22L (the old 04L/22R is now a taxiway), and runway 04R is in use most of the time because of the prevailing wind. That means landings come in over the lagoon from the south-west and the usable land positions face the evening sun: plan on summer afternoons after 16:00, and accept that winter photography is very hard. Expect long walks along saltmarsh embankments, heat haze and mosquitoes, but also some of the most atmospheric arrival shots in Italy.

Barena embankment off Via Bazzera (Tessera)
A dirt track along the lagoon edge south-west of the airport, facing aircraft landing on 04R. Walking further along the track opens up clean views of line-ups, where the fence and long grass do not block the gear. At low tide you can step down from the embankment onto the saltmarsh.
- Getting there
- Park in Tessera village, two minutes from the terminal, and walk along Via Bazzera to a small bridge with a red and white gate on the left; follow the dirt road about 350 m, or another 600 m for line-ups. Tessera is served by local buses.
- Best time
- 04R arrivals in summer after 16:00; in winter only line-ups work, from about 13:00.
- Lens
- 150–300 mm.
Small lagoon beach beyond the Barena
A sandy patch on the lagoon shore further along the same track, lined up for 04R arrivals over the water. It is the purest lagoon shot at Venice, with nothing between you and the approach.
- Getting there
- From the Barena position continue along the track about 700 m and turn left to the beach. There is nothing here at all — bring water and insect repellent.
- Best time
- 04R arrivals, after 16:00 in summer only.
- Lens
- 135 mm for an A330, around 240 mm for an A319.
Grass verge by the bridge on Via Paliaga (Casino)
The best place at Venice for heavy departures off 04R, near the Casino di Venezia at Ca' Noghera on the north-east side. Narrowbodies are distant here, but transatlantic 767s, 787s and A330s climb out in front of you.
- Getting there
- Park on the right of Via Paliaga about 100 m past the casino, walk back about 150 m to a small bridge and stand on the grass to the left before it. A car is the practical option.
- Best time
- 04R departures, after 16:00 in summer; backlit all day in winter.
- Lens
- 200–300 mm; a 777-300ER is about 210 mm.
Field gate on Via Paliaghetta
An alternative to the casino spot for 04R departures, with a slightly closer angle that also works for narrowbodies. A B&B sits at the top of the road.
- Getting there
- Drive along the SS14 Via Triestina, turn into Via Paliaghetta, park at the roadside and walk to the gate.
- Best time
- 04R departures, after 16:00 in summer.
- Lens
- 135 mm for a 747-8, about 250 mm for a 737-800.
Embankment at Montiron
The only morning option at Venice: a lagoon embankment far out along the departure path, where aircraft climbing off 04R bank right in front of you. It is rarely used because most heavy departures leave around midday and the distance makes low cloud or mist a deal-breaker.
- Getting there
- Drive the SS14 about 6 km from the terminal to Montiron and turn right toward a B&B; park nearby, pass the gate opposite and after 100 m climb left onto the embankment. For left-turning departures walk about 1 km south to the river mouth. No shade or shelter.
- Best time
- 04R departures, sunrise until noon, in clear weather only.
- Lens
- 300–400 mm; an A330 needs about 400 mm.

What you'll see
Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air and Volotea all base aircraft here, so A320s, A319s and 737s fill the schedule, and almost every major European network carrier flies in. The summer long-haul programme is the draw: Delta, United and American to the US, Air Canada to Canada, Emirates and Qatar Airways to the Gulf, plus Turkish Airlines and seasonal charters from further afield. Volumes fall sharply in winter. Business jets peak around the Biennale and Film Festival. Leonardo's helicopter facility on the north side tests NH90s; do not photograph the military installation itself.

FAQ
What's that plane over Venice?
Spotterra's live map shows every ADS-B aircraft over Venice, the lagoon and the Veneto in real time with type, registration and route — useful for telling which transatlantic widebody is about to pass over the Barena.
Which runway does Venice use?
Only 04R/22L is active; the parallel strip is a taxiway. Runway 04R is in use most of the time, so arrivals come over the lagoon and departures head north-east over the mainland.
When should I spot at LIPZ?
Summer, after 16:00. Almost every land spot faces the sun before then, and winter is very difficult. For morning light the Montiron embankment is the only option.
Is there a spot inside the terminal?
Visitors have reported an airside terrace accessed through a lounge after security, so a boarding pass is required. Access depends on lounge staff and has changed over the years — do not count on it.
