Planespotting Catania — LICC

Catania Fontanarossa Airport · LICC / CTA

P2Etna views

Fontanarossa is Sicily's busiest airport and one of the most scenic in Europe: on a clear day the snow-capped cone of Mount Etna rises behind aircraft landing on runway 26, and the 08 approach crosses citrus groves on the plain west of the city. There is one runway, 08/26, used in both directions depending on the wind, with the terminal on the north side and the sea a short distance to the east. Most spots lie south and west of the field, so the sun stays behind you from morning to afternoon, and in winter all day long. The catch is airport security: staff now send people away from areas right next to the fence, a minimum distance from the new fence is enforced, and there is a military helicopter area in the south-west corner that must not be photographed. The spots below keep a sensible distance. Etna's eruptions occasionally close the airport for hours, which is worth knowing before you book.

Where to spot

Open ground on Viale Presidente Kennedy

An unused plot between Viale Presidente Kennedy and Via San Giuseppe La Rena, on the coastal side, under the approach to runway 26. This is where the classic Catania shot is taken: an arriving jet with Etna filling the background on clear days.

Getting there
Viale Presidente Kennedy is the coast road south of the city towards the beaches of the Plaia. A car is the practical way round; there is no useful public transport between spots. Avoid standing close to the fence.
Best time
26 arrivals, morning to afternoon (all day in winter). Clear winter and spring mornings give the sharpest view of Etna.
Lens
About 130 mm for a 737 or similar.

Orange grove off Strada Comunale Passo Cavaliere (Pigno)

A citrus field in the Pigno industrial area west of the airport, lined up with the approach to runway 08. You can pick your own angle among the trees for landing shots with a distinctly Sicilian foreground.

Getting there
Park along Strada Comunale Passo Cavaliere and cross a small dry stream bed into the field. Dogs living in an old building nearby can be territorial — stay calm and keep your distance.
Best time
08 arrivals, morning to afternoon (all day in winter).
Lens
110–205 mm (a 737 about 110 mm, an ATR 42 about 205 mm).

Ruin beside the orange grove

A roofless old building right next to the orange grove, giving a similar angle on 08 arrivals with easier access. Watch your footing on the loose stones around the old gateway.

Getting there
Same parking as the orange grove on Strada Comunale Passo Cavaliere; the ruin is a few steps away.
Best time
08 arrivals, morning to afternoon.
Lens
About 155 mm for an A321 or 737.

Shopping mall parking deck west of the airport

The rooftop parking level of the large shopping centre west of the field, known among spotters for its hypermarket, looks down the approach to runway 08. Distances are long and haze is common, but it is comfortable and has food and toilets.

Getting there
Drive to the mall and go up to the parking deck. Practical on a summer evening combined with shopping.
Best time
08 arrivals, evenings in summer only — the sun does not come round far enough in winter.
Lens
300–400 mm for single-aisle aircraft.

Hotel Miramare (third floor)

A dated, noisy but conveniently placed hotel whose third-floor rooms look over the runway, the holding point for 26 and part of the terminal. Useful as a base and for logging departures without dealing with security outside.

Getting there
Book a third-floor room facing the airport. Check availability and room orientation when booking.
Best time
26 departures and taxiing, depending on room orientation and time of day.
Lens
100–400 mm.

Respect private property, signage and the airport security perimeter. Spotterra predicts the active runway from live weather on the dashboard.

What you'll see

Catania is a low-cost stronghold: Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet and Volotea operate large networks alongside ITA Airways and Aeroitalia on the domestic trunk routes to Rome and Milan. Summer brings a flood of leisure flights from Germany, the UK, Scandinavia, Poland and France — Eurowings, Condor, Jet2, SAS, Norwegian and others — and the numbers stay high from spring to October. Widebodies are rare, so variety comes from colour schemes and charters. Naval Air Station Sigonella lies just to the south-west, so US Navy P-8s, MQ-4C Tritons and transports often appear on the map nearby, and Italian military and coastguard helicopters use the field.

FAQ

What's that plane over Catania?

Spotterra's live map shows every ADS-B aircraft over Catania, Etna and eastern Sicily with type, registration and route — including US Navy traffic out of Sigonella when it transmits.

Will security bother me at Catania?

Possibly. Airport staff send people away from areas directly next to the fence, and a minimum distance from the fence applies. Police tend to be more relaxed than airport security. Keep your ID with you and favour the spots on the approach paths rather than along the runway.

How do I get Etna in the shot?

Shoot 26 arrivals from the coastal side near Viale Presidente Kennedy on a clear day — winter and spring mornings are best before haze builds.

Does Etna close the airport?

Sometimes. Ash from eruptions can suspend operations or limit arrivals for hours. Check the airport's notices before travelling.
